Vision

To build and strengthen neighborhoods serving ALL economic levels.

Neighborhoods Inc. is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to community development in Hammond. Traditionally, urban neighborhood development has limited itself to focusing on decaying areas or low-to- moderate income households. Neighborhoods Inc. is different in that it assists people of all incomes, from the most prosperous to low or fixed incomes, to add value to their properties. Neighborhoods Inc. goes beyond traditional community development activities by initiating innovative projects, partnering with other organizations to bring to the Calumet Region events we would normally travel elsewhere to attend. Neighborhoods Inc. recognizes that Calumet Region residents need more than a place to live; they also need a place to enjoy. Neighborhoods Inc. organizes and advocates unique, positive and upbeat events for all ages and interests. We are continuously working to make the Calumet Region a highly desirable place to live in the Chicago metropolitan area.

Mission Statement

Neighborhoods Inc. will work to retain and promote economic, racial, and ethnic diversity in Hammond, principally through programs designed to:

• Increase homeownership opportunities
• Improve the quality of ALL housing
• Build neighborhood pride

Changing Hammond

Over the last three years, Neighborhoods Inc. has taken the lead to serve as a vehicle to change perceptions about Hammond. The We're Neighbors project brings people together for block clubs and parties, where neighbors sometimes meet for the first time. State Line Fest is an example of joining a "two-state neighborhood" over invisible borders.  Again and again, neighbors are becoming friends by meeting at community events, in our streets and parks. Perhaps it's just an evening stroll past the public art exhibits, or at a musical venue such as the Concert in Harrison Park, or maybe to share in some good canine fun at the Dog Walk. Neighbors are finding reasons to connect. 

Taking Pride in our Neighborhoods Causes Ripple Effects

The goal of Neighborhoods Inc. is to position Hammond as a community of choice for those who have a choice to live anywhere. Current homeowners are motivated to improve their homes by taking out rehab loans with flexible rates and terms. Neighborhoods Inc. commends homeowners with awards for the Best House on the Block, motivating others to set an example for other neighbors to follow, raising the standard for the entire neighborhood. Home rehabbers send strong messages to their neighbors that they are here to stay. To encourage an environment of stability and vitality, Neighborhoods Inc. offers flexible loans for the Improve as You Move program. Purchasing a home is usually the most capital-intensive venture people undertake. The Homebuyer Education Classes teach educates prospective homeowners about the purchase process. This program arms purchasers with knowledge when making financing and other housing decisions.
