Neighborhoods sometime cross borders. Imaginary lines, like the "line" representing the Indiana and Illinois border at State Line Avenue, do not reflect the fact that residents shop the same stores, walk the same sidewalks, and share the same sense of community.

On July 27, 2002, Neighborhoods Inc.
sponsored the
second annual State Line Fest, a block party
festival held on State Line Avenue between Warren and
Waltham Streets. The festival featured children's games
and raffles, street performers, a DJ and a dunk tank, as
well as information booths promoting Neighborhoods Inc.
Despite temperatures soaring in the 90s, more than five
hundred people attended from throughout Lake (IN) and
Cook (IL) counties. The event was attended by Hammond
and Calumet City police officers, and the latter opened
their squad cars to the curious while their K-9 Unit
demonstrated police dog skills. The Talent Show was a
highlight for many, showcasing local singers, dancers,
instrumentalists, and talents more obscure. The six
winners hailed from Chicago, Calumet City, Crown Point,
Hammond, and Highland. Local food vendors, Rosko's
Concessions, Doggeriffic, and State Line Pizza, provided
food for the event.
By empowering residents and supporting municipal leaders in their efforts to reduce crime, Neighborhoods inc. is strengthening the State Line neighborhood.
